Is there any science behind it?
In many other countries, this healthy hobby is believed to increase positive feelings and reduce stress. Experience increases oxytocin in humans, a hormone released during social bonding. We all know how relaxing it can be to hug a cat or dog, and that feeling seems to increase when you hug a larger animal, reports the BBC.
“As a psychologist and as someone who herself experienced it, being with cows is extremely therapeutic,” says Dr. Ritu Dangwal, Associate Professor at NIIT University, who regularly goes to the Animal Shelter in Sadgrana, Gurugram to experience such therapy as reported by India today. “We are stuck in a rat race and our anxiety is at an all-time high.
Being with an affection animal, one that does not judge and loves unconditionally, works wonders. The warmth and surrender you feel with them are more healing than any counseling session. “
Why it is becoming a wellness trend in Covid-19 pandemic?
The pandemic has caused immense loneliness among people. Along with the restrictions imposed of physical touch and enforced isolation, this has led people into a dark and sad state of mind. Although preventive measures are needed to ensure physical health, sudden changes in human lifestyle have affected people’s mental health.
People who experienced cow hugs reported feelings of relaxation. It also gave a sense of positivity and helped reduce stress. Since the beginning of the pandemic, people have craved touch, warmth of it, optimism, and methods of stress reduction.
A probable explanation of why cow cuddling has been popular around this time could be the therapeutic effects it induces. An increase in oxytocin is very welcome in today’s scenario, and hugs from cows came to the rescue of people at a time when they needed it most.
